About the Position

Performs intermediate technical work piloting a medivac helicopter, and related work as apparent or assigned.  Work is performed under the limited supervision of the EMS Chief Pilot/Director of Operations.  

Job Duties


  • Operate a rotary wing aircraft in response to emergency medical requests, searches and natural disasters.
  • Assumes responsibility for safety of passengers, cargo and medical personnel.
  • Determines the airworthiness of the aircraft and inspects maintenance documents to include status sheet.
  • Analyzes aircraft performance and weather conditions to determine flight acceptance.


Position Qualifications

Thorough knowledge of helicopter operation; thorough knowledge of the principles and techniques of emergency care; thorough knowledge of Federal Aviation Administration standards and regulations; thorough knowledge of air navigation and rotary wing aircraft capabilities and performance; thorough knowledge of flight planning, meteorology and aircraft maintenance requirements; thorough knowledge of local geography and weather phenomenon; ability to operate an aircraft; ability to read weather charts, aviation publications, charts and sectionals, and instrument approach plates; ability to understand weight and balance diagrams; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to keep simple records and prepare reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.

Education, Experience and Supplemental Information

Applicant must possess a commercial pilot certification with instrument rating in Rotorcraft/Helicopter, ATP preferred. Position requires a minimum of 3500 flight hours, 2500 rotorcraft time, 1000 hours turbine, 200 hours night, NVG qualified with current experience, current class 2 medical, instrument flying proficiency, and multiengine helicopter experience. EMS experience and BK117, EC135, or EC145 experience is preferred. A cooperative and team player attitude is imperative. Applicants must live in Dare County, be 18 years of age with a High School diploma and possess a valid Driver's License. Pre-employment drug screening, skills evaluation/oral boards, and a background/driver's license record check will be completed during the employment process.
