Edgecombe County EMT



Performs basic level life support, transport, stabilization procedures, and emergency medical care at the Basic Level in the Emergency Services program of the County.
An employee in this class is responsible for responding to the scene of emergency and non-emergency calls, applying necessary medical treatment to sick or injured persons, and transporting persons to a medical appointments and medical facilities. Work is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions, extremes in temperatures, noise, vibrations, hazards associated with emergency medical work including exposures to fumes, odors, dusts mists, gases, poor ventilation, and oils. Because of the nature of the work, the employee is exposed to human blood and is subject to the OSHA requirements on blood borne pathogens. Work is performed in accordance with established EMS Division operating guidelines and under local medical director approved protocols.




  • Serves as operator of emergency medical unit responding to calls for assistance and transports patients to medical facilities, nursing homes and medical appointments as necessary.
  • Administers basic level of life support techniques and procedures based on patient assessment.
  • Administering basic and restricted advanced life support to patients at the scene, en-route to the hospital and in a pre-hospital setting in accordance with federal, state, and local laws, regulations and standards;
  • Assessing the nature and extent of injury or illness to establish and prioritize medical procedures to be followed;
  • Gathers patient medical and insurance information from the patient, family members or bystanders and inputs into the computer
  • Completes necessary records and reports for emergency calls including information for billing documentation, and legal accountability.
  • Properly document each transport on the approved Patient Care Report in accordance with Edgecombe County EMS policies and procedures;
  • Participates in a continuous training program to improve competence in medical technical work and in ambulance service and operation; studies street and road patterns of the County.
  • Inspects and tests ambulances and their emergency equipment, maintaining proper inventory of equipment and supplies; cleans and sanitizes ambulance and equipment and ensures that they are in proper and good working order.
  • Assuring that vehicles are in good working condition at all times, are properly maintained and stocked, have all necessary equipment and this equipment is in good working order at all times;
  • Cleaning, organizing and restocking vehicles in a ready condition after each transport;
  • Receiving requests for emergency and non-emergency ambulance service and other duties related to communication via two-way radio and other communication devices;
  • Maintains cleanliness and performs minor maintenance of Emergency Medical Service facilities.
  • The EMT must perform all job responsibilities in a manner that protects patient privacy;
  • Promptly responding to instructions from a dispatcher, driving, and operation specially equipped emergency vehicles to specified locations at a safe and controlled speed;
  • Monitoring communication equipment to maintain contact with the dispatcher;

Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.

Must be able to perform very heavy work exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to lift objects.

Must possess the visual acuity to access patient situations, administer treatments operate mobile equipment, monitor work site progress, use a computer, and use measurement devices.



  • The EMT must have a minimum of either a high school diploma or a GED as evidence of completion of a high school education, and must have and maintain current state emergency medical technician certification and be in good standing with the Medical Director.

  • The EMT must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license, current state EMT certification, American Heart Association BCLS certification, EVOC/EVD certification, and other certifications as required.
