SERAC/NHRMC TRAUMA AND EMERGENCY SYMPOSIUM WILMINGTON NC (22-Jan-12) The SERAC in Wilmington has announced the 23rd annual Trauma and Emergency Symposium to be held on 11-12 February 2012 at the Wilmington Convention Center. EMS PROGRAM APPLICATIONS BEING ACCEPTED AT WCU CULLOWHEE NC (22-Jan-12) WCU is currently accepting applications for its on-line B.S. paramedic degree program and the Emergency Medical Care option in the Master of Health Sciences (MHS) graduate degree program. The online B.S. degree program is available to certified paramedics who have completed 60 hours of college transfer credit (may be in any field of study) with a minimum 2.5 GPA. Upon completion of their studies at WCU, students will receive the Bachelor of Science degree in Emergency Medical Care, with a concentration in Health Services Management or Science (pre-med). The program is part-time and offered primarily over the Internet, with one 3-day lab session on the Cullowhee campus. Space in the program is limited and applications will be accepted until March 1. The Master of Health Sciences program is web-based and offers two areas of concentration: EMS management and EMS education. Admission criteria include a baccalaureate degree with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 in all upper level courses, acceptable scores on the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) and 3 professional or academic letters of recommendation. The program is offered on a part-time basis (two courses per semester) and can be completed in two years. Upon completion of their studies at WCU, students will receive the Master of Health Science degree with a concentration in Emergency Medical Care. Champions from Region 3, that picked up the big prize at the Awards Banquet at Emergency Medicine Today at the Koury Convention Center in Greensboro. Cabarrus succeeds Surry County EMS, last year's winners of the competition. GEORGE JOHNSON AWARD GOES TO BOB BAILEY
Bailey was cited for his EMS accomplishments which began in 1973 in his native Rutherford County and which continue to this day, 38 years later. After Rutherford County Bailey worked for the state OEMS as a Regional Coordinator, Education and Programs Consultant, Assistant Chief, Deputy Chief and then Chief of the Office. He held the post of chief until his retirement in 1999. His accomplishments there included the creation of the Certification Inventory System (CIS) and legislation to enhance and structure the state's trauma program. Bob has remained active as an EMS Consultant and member of the State EMS Advisory Council. He has been president of the National Association of State EMS Directors and the Board of Directors of the National Registry of EMTs. He has received the National Highway Traffic Safety Award for Public Service and the National Association of EMS Physicians Ronald D. Stewart MD award for outstanding service in pre-hospital care.
RALEIGH NC (09-Nov-11) Carolinas Medical Center NorthEast in Concord, a Level III trauma center has had its certification renewed for four years after a site visit by OEMS. In presenting the certificate of renewal to Shawn Griffin, RN, the Trauma Program Manager and Mary Anne Nolan, RN, the Emergency Department Director, OEMS Chief Regina Godette-Crawford pointed out strengths in the CMC-NE program, including clear and strong administrative support, a very involved trauma medical director, trauma program manager, trauma PI integration with the hospital wide quality program, the physical facilities, and its relationship with the Carolinas Medical Center. The award was made at the quarterly meeting of the NC State EMS Advisory Council. OEMS HONORS ALLEN PATE
A Marine at age 19, Pate came home and became a deputy with the Onslow County Sheriff's Office. He was active with the Jacksonville Rescue Squad and the Jacksonville Fire Department. He became a tactical medic and continued to work with the Marine Corps at Camp LeJeune. Later the opportunity to work within the State Medical Response System through the Southeastern Regional Advisory Committee (SERAC) presented itself and it was a match right off. "What is it I can do for you because I have time," was the typical Allen line. He was at his best when things were the worst. He is missed by many. The award was accepted by his wife, Nancy, and celebrated with many who knew him and worked with him. RALEIGH NC (11-Aug-11) The August meeting of the EMS Advisory Council was the first to be shared over the Internet. The Webinar has been placed online for those who missed the live performance, so that it may be viewed at your convenience. One of North Carolina's oldest and widest-read publications dealing with EMS and Fire is the Carolina Fire Rescue and EMS Journal. It has evolved over the years from a newsprint publication with little editorial direction to today's well written and edited online edition. TWENTY YEARS OF PARAMEDIC COMPETITION RALEIGH NC (11-Nov-10) A video highlighting the twenty years of state paramedic competition has been compiled by Brian Barrier at the EMS Performance Improvement Center. Most of the materials are from photographs made by Carl Van Cott of the Office of EMS.
