22nd PARAMEDIC COMPETITION ANNOUNCED

RALEIGH NC (17-April-2012) The Central Regional EMS Office has announced the entry period for the 22nd EMT-P preliminary competition is now open.  Entries will be accepted until Friday June 1, 2012 at 5:00 PM.  A maximum of 50 teams will be accepted. Paramedic level agencies may enter up to two teams naming a primary and secondary team.  The second entry will be an alternate unless the 50 spots are not filled with first entry teams.  If this occurs, the secondary teams in order received will fill the remaining open 50 slots.  Entry fees are $55.00 per team.  

Teams will compete at 5 sites across the state on Friday July 20, 2012 with the winner at each site going on to compete in the finals at EM Today ‘12 on Sunday October 7, 2012 in Greensboro.  The entry letter with instructions and entry form are attached here.

TRAUMA CENTERS APPROVED

RALEIGH NC (14-Feb-12)  The State Office of EMS has approved two Level III Trauma Centers after the State EMS Advisory Council unanimously endorsed them at its quarterly meeting.

Cleveland Regional Medical Center in Shelby had its certification renewed after a site visit which cited a strong commitment from the staff and administration for their Trauma program, strong injury prevention programs and relationships with community providers and relationships with community providers, injury prevention research, assistance provided to other Level III and soon-to-be Level III Trauma Centers, and involvement of Carolinas Medical Center/Level I Trauma Center in coverage and PI process were listed as strengths.  Cleveland Regional was the first certified Level III Trauma Center in the state.

Receiving their initial certification as a Level III Trauma Center was CaroMont Health-Gaston Memorial Hospital in Gastonia.  The review committee was impressed with the leadership and strong staff commitment for the Trauma Program, the effective PI process for trauma service patients, strong relationships with the County EMS and RAC, their lab service capability, and their in-house "Trauma University."

GO GRAY IN MAY BECAUSE GRAY MATTER MATTERS

ASHEVILLE NC (28-Apr-12) Buncombe County EMS, in conjunction with other organizations is helping to sponsor and promote the Go Gray In May Because Gray Matter Matters program. 

The program is an effort to promote stroke awareness among the EMS community as well as the population in general.

NW PIEDMONT ACUTE CARE AND TRAUMA SYMPOSIUM

WINSTON-SALEM NC (09-Apr-12) The Northwest Piedmont Trauma and Acute Care Symposium is being sponsored by the Piedmont Triad Council which includes EMS agencies in Davie, Forsyth, Stokes, Surry, and Yadkin. Hospitals representatives include Davie County Hospital, Forsyth Medical Center, Wake Forest Baptist Health, Northern Hospital of Surry County, Yadkin Valley Community Hospital, Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital of Elkin, and Pioneer Community Hospital of Stokes. The classes will be repeated on Thursday, May 17th to ensure all providers have an opportunity to attend the conference.

This symposium will focus on a variety of topics pertaining to Team Focused CPR, Post Resuscitation, Public Safety Awareness, and Trauma. It is designed to meet your educational and clinical needs, with topics of interest available for all who provide care to the clinical patient (nurses, nurse practitioners, physicians, physician’s assistants, and EMS personnel).

EASTERN REGIONAL TRAUMA SYMPOSIUM 2012

EMS PROGRAM APPLICATIONS BEING ACCEPTED AT WCU

CULLOWHEE NC (22-Jan-12) WCU is currently accepting applications for its on-line B.S. paramedic degree program and the Emergency Medical Care option in the Master of Health Sciences (MHS) graduate degree program.  The online B.S. degree program is available to certified paramedics who have completed 60 hours of college transfer credit (may be in any field of study) with a minimum 2.5 GPA. Upon completion of their studies at WCU, students will receive the Bachelor of Science degree in Emergency Medical Care, with a concentration in Health Services Management or Science (pre-med).  The program is part-time and offered primarily over the Internet, with one 3-day lab session on the Cullowhee campus.  Space in the program is limited and applications will be accepted until March 1.  Classes begin in August.  You may apply online at http://www1.cfnc.org/applications/WCU_Dist_Ed/apply.html?application_id=3631  .

The Master of Health Sciences program is web-based and offers two areas of concentration: EMS management and EMS education.   Admission criteria include a baccalaureate degree with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 in all upper level courses, acceptable scores on the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) and 3 professional or academic letters of recommendation.  The program is offered on a part-time basis (two courses per semester) and can be completed in two years.  Upon completion of their studies at WCU, students will receive the Master of Health Science degree with a concentration in Emergency Medical Care.  Applications will be accepted until March 1 and you may apply online at http://www.wcu.edu/5642.asp .  Classes begin in August.

CAROLINA FIRE  RESCUE AND EMS JOURNAL

One of North Carolina's oldest and widest-read publications dealing with EMS and Fire is the Carolina Fire Rescue and EMS Journal.  It has evolved over the years from a newsprint publication with little editorial direction to today's well written and edited online edition.

TWENTY YEARS OF PARAMEDIC COMPETITION

RALEIGH NC (11-Nov-10) A video highlighting the twenty years of state paramedic competition has been compiled by Brian Barrier at the EMS Performance Improvement Center.  Most of the materials are from photographs made by Carl Van Cott of the Office of EMS.  You will need the Quick Time Viewer to see the video which you can stop and start if you like while viewing the pictures.  The video may be viewed at this link.
