Wake County EMS Training Specialist (Training Chief)

What You'll Be Doing

The EMS Training Specialist (Training Chief) is responsible for supporting training, continuing education and recredentialing for the Wake County EMS System. Management and support of training and education will include direct delivery of education through traditional and non-traditional methods, evaluating program effectiveness, maintaining accurate records, analyzing data and research, participating in budget preparations, managing the Field Training and Evaluation Program and supervising employees. The EMS Training Specialist (Training Chief) will need to have strong interpersonal skills in order to directly address issues with employees, partners, and the general public. This position has an integral role in the management of the EMS System through employee supervision, employee mentoring, employee remediation, and task prioritization. This position will be responsible for compiling data and developing reports as well as presenting reports to internal/external audiences. A successful candidate is someone with a high level of critical thinking, problem solving, multitasking ability, prioritization and interpersonal skills as well as communication skills both written and verbal. This candidate should be someone who currently holds a North Carolina Paramedic certification with over three years of experience. Preferred qualifications include a Bachelors in EMS or equivalent, instructor certification or instructional methodologies coursework, has previous experience teaching initial or continuing EMS education, and has experience with conducting simulations using a high fidelity patient simulator.

The Basics (Required Education and Experience)

  • Associate's degree in Emergency Medical Services, Emergency Management, Fire Protection or related field.
  • Three years of experience in public safety programs.
  • Paramedic Certification required.
  • A valid driver's license and a "safe" driving record required.
  • Equivalent education and experience combination accepted.


Beyond the Basics (Preferred Education and Experience)

  • Bachelor’s in EMS or equivalent
  • Instructor certification or instructional methodologies coursework
  • Previous experience teaching initial or continuing EMS education
  • Experience conducting simulations using a high-fidelity patient simulator
