POSITION SUMMARY: An employee in this class serves as a member of a crew responding to emergency and non-emergency medical calls, administering medical stabilization to patients in the field, and studying and training in the methods and techniques for emergency medical care.  Work includes:

  • Operating a mobile medical unit.
  • Administering appropriate medical care to sick or injured persons.
  • Accurate concise documentation of all care.
  • Participating in the maintenance of station equipment and quarters.
  • Rendering care in accordance with established emergency medical procedures and techniques as outlined in the patient care protocols.
  • Tact, courtesy and firmness are required in dealing with sick or injured persons and with the general public.
  •   The Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic is an Advanced Life Support (ALS) Technician.  Skills are those of the Emergency Medical Technician and EMT-Intermediate plus manual defibrillation, cardioversion, and pacing; administration of Advanced Cardiac Life Support medications; cricothyrotomy, chest needle decompression; administration of other advanced medications and other ALS skills as defined by the N.C. Office of Emergency Medical  Services for this level.
  • Responds to emergency calls as a driver or attendant; performs necessary rescue work; and administers necessary emergency medical care.

Other duties as assigned by Supervisor or EMS administration.
