The Position

Performs management and professional work directing the emergency medical, emergency management and fire marshal services for the county as assigned or in the absence of the Emergency Services Director.


Examples of Duties

Performs complex professional, administrative and supervisory work assisting in planning, organizing and directing the programs and staff of the Emergency Services Department. An employee in this class assists in planning, organizing, and directing the activities of the emergency services department for the county. Responsibilities include assisting with the direction of the activities of the Emergency Medical Services, Emergency Management, County Fire Marshal's Office, and Financial Operations. The employee is responsible for assisting in terrorism preparedness, planning, training, and grant administration; assisting in providing coordination of departmental activities; and serving as the county's liaison to volunteer fire and EMS organizations. Primary responsibilities include assisting with budget preparation and administration, fiscal management, planning, staffing, training, and performance reviews for the division. The employee has extensive public contact and the work requires a variety of technical and detailed knowledge and requires the significant use of independent judgment and initiative. The employee is subject to the usual hazards associated with emergency services functions, including working in both inside and outside environmental conditions, hazardous fumes, dusts, odors, mists, and gases. Work may expose the employee to human blood or body fluids and thus the job is subject to the OSHA requirements on blood borne pathogens. Work may require responding to and directing incidents on nights, weekends, and holidays. Performance for this position will be supervised by the Emergency Services Director and evaluated through conferences, results of work, reports, and public feedback.


Minimum Requirements

Graduation from a four year college or university in Health Services, Public Administration or related field with considerable progressively responsible experience in Emergency Services including supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum of five years supervisory experience is required.


Supplemental Information

Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license.

Completion of NIMS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700, 800.

Harnett County residency will be required as a condition of employment.


Annual Salary

Minimum Salary: $67,781.00
Job Rate: $81,337.00
