Edgecombe County Emergency Medical Technician – Advanced

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

 

Performs advanced level life support, transport, stabilization procedures, and emergency medical care at the Advanced EMT Level in the Emergency Services program of the County.
 
An employee in this class is responsible for responding to the scene of emergency and non-emergency calls, applying necessary medical treatment to sick or injured persons, and transporting persons to a medical appointments and medical facilities. Work is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions, extremes in temperatures, noise, vibrations, hazards associated with emergency medical work including exposures to fumes, odors, dusts mists, gases, poor ventilation, and oils. Because of the nature of the work, the employee is exposed to human blood and is subject to the OSHA requirements on blood borne pathogens. Work is performed in accordance with established EMS Division operating guidelines and under local medical director approved protocols.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Responds to emergency calls in an ambulance and performs necessary rescue work in accordance with established protocols for advanced life support; administers necessary emergency medical care requiring the use of suction units, immobilization equipment, intravenous infusions, syringes and medications, and cardiac monitors/defibrillator/pacers, and performance of intubation/advanced airway management.
  • Administers basic/advanced level of life support techniques and procedures based on patient assessment.
  • Administering basic/advanced life support to patients at the scene, en-route to the hospital and in a pre-hospital setting in accordance with federal, state, and local laws, regulations and standards;
  • Assessing the nature and extent of injury or illness to establish and prioritize medical procedures to be followed;
  • Gathers patient medical and insurance information from the patient, family members or bystanders and inputs into the computer
  • Completes necessary records and reports for emergency calls including information for billing documentation, and legal accountability.
  • Properly document each transport on the approved Patient Care Report in accordance with Edgecombe County EMS policies and procedures;
  • Participates in a continuous training program to improve competence in medical technical work and in ambulance service and operation; studies street and road patterns of the County.
  • Inspects and tests ambulances and their emergency equipment, maintaining proper inventory of equipment and supplies; cleans and sanitizes ambulance and equipment and ensures that they are in proper and good working order.
  • Assuring that vehicles are in good working condition at all times, are properly maintained and stocked, have all necessary equipment and this equipment is in good working order at all times;
  • Cleaning, organizing and restocking vehicles in a ready condition after each transport;
  • Receiving requests for emergency and non-emergency ambulance service and other duties related to communication via two-way radio and other communication devices;
  • Maintains cleanliness and performs minor maintenance of Emergency Medical Service facilities.
  • The Advanced EMT must perform all job responsibilities in a manner that protects patient privacy;
  • Promptly responding to instructions from a dispatcher, driving, and operation specially equipped emergency vehicles to specified locations at a safe and controlled speed;
  • Monitoring communication equipment to maintain contact with the dispatcher;

 

Additional Job Duties

  • With appropriate training and assignment, may serve as a Preceptor, serving as a mentor to assigned new employees or students completing clinical hours, evaluating competency and performance; may serve as a clinical coordinator assigning and tracking the assignment of preceptors to employees or students.
  • Assists with the direction and control during disaster situations.
  • Performs related duties as required

 

KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

 

  • Considerable knowledge of and skill in administering emergency medical procedures and techniques
  • Considerable knowledge of anatomy and physiology.
  • Considerable knowledge of intravenous therapy and skill in recognizing adverse conditions.
  • Considerable knowledge of equipment and supplies employed in emergency care of patients and accident victims.
  • Considerable knowledge of county geography and locations of roads and streets.
  • Skill in recognizing trauma and signs and symptoms of medical emergencies to determine appropriate treatment.

  • Ability to perform duties in accordance with established emergency medical procedures and techniques, medical protocols and standing orders.
  • Ability to respond quickly and calmly in emergencies and stressful situations.
  • Ability to safely drive an emergency medical vehicle in adverse conditions and according to motor vehicle laws.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in a tactful and firm manner with the public.
  • Ability to deal with stress and death and dying patients.
  • Ability to accurately record services provided on required forms.
  • Ability to work with co-workers, law enforcement personnel, fire, medical personnel, patients and the general public, and to work with a diverse socioeconomic population based on the unique situations encountered.
  • Ability to maintain vehicles, equipment, and facilities.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of patient contact.
  • Ability to meet health and fitness standards.

 

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.

Must be able to perform very heavy work exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to lift objects.

Must possess the visual acuity to access patient situations, administer treatments operate mobile equipment, monitor work site progress, use a computer, and use measurement devices.

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • The Advanced EMT must have a minimum of either a high school diploma or a GED as evidence of completion of a high school education, and must have and maintain current state emergency medical technician certification and be in good standing with the Medical Director.

  • The Advanced EMT must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license, current state Advanced EMT certification, American Heart Association BLS certification, EVOC/EVD certification, other certifications such as ACLS, ITLS/PHTLS, PALS/PEP and others, within timeframes established by the County.
